Ford Ranger PX3 Bullbar Guide (2018-2022): ADR-Compliant Options for the Facelift

The PX3 Ford Ranger (2018-2022) is the last of the "old school" Rangers before the Next Gen redesign. A 3.2L or 2.0L Bi-Turbo diesel, conventional front bumper, and no ADAS radar to worry about (on most trims). For many tradies and tourers, the PX3 is the goldilocks Ranger — capable, simple, and easy to modify.

A proper bullbar is still the first serious upgrade. This guide covers PX3-specific options, ADR compliance, and pricing.

PX2 vs PX3 — mostly cross-compatible, but check

The PX3 is a facelift of the PX2 (2015-2018), not a full redesign. The front bumper, grille, and headlight housings are revised on the PX3, but chassis mount points are largely the same. Result:

  • PX2-specific bars generally will NOT fit a PX3 (bumper geometry differs).
  • PX3 bars usually DO fit late PX2s with minor bracket changes.
  • Always check product listing specifies "PX3" or "2018-2022" or "MK3".

ADR compliance and the Raptor exception

PX3 bullbars must satisfy AS 4876.1-2002 and ADR 69 (airbag compatibility). The Ranger Raptor (launched 2018 in Australia) is a separate platform — wider track, Fox shocks, unique bumper. Raptor bars are NOT PX3-compatible. If you have a Raptor, buy a Raptor-specific bar.

Wildtrak X trim parking sensors

Wildtrak and Wildtrak X trims come with front parking sensors in the bumper. Quality PX3 bars include sensor pods that plug straight into the factory loom. Budget bars often don't — your sensors are disconnected after install. Check kit contents before buying.

Loop, hoopless, or triple-loop?

Single-loop (hoop) bullbar

The mainstream choice. Bonnet protection, aerial mounts, light-bar provision. Steel bars 80-100kg, alloy 50-70kg. Suits touring Rangers, daily drivers, and most station builds.

Hoopless comp bar

Maximum approach angle, cleaner look. Popular on Raptor-style PX3 builds. Less animal-strike protection.

Triple-loop commercial bar

Heavy-duty with grille and headlight loops. Common on fleet and mine-spec PX3s. Overkill for a weekend tourer.

Winch compatibility

The PX3 chassis accepts winches up to 12,000lb in most bars. Confirm mounting pattern (254 x 114mm standard), control box placement, and that rated recovery points (5000kg+ each) are integrated.

Steel vs alloy on the PX3

The PX3 front axle rating is 1450kg. A steel bullbar + 9500lb winch + spotties adds 120-140kg. Manageable on a lightly-built PX3, but tight on a fully-accessorised tourer. Alloy saves 35-45kg and is the right call for most touring builds.

Steel wins for:

  • Remote / station work where roo strikes are routine.
  • Regular winching or heavy recoveries.
  • Fleet applications with long service lives.

Pricing landed in Australia

  • Alloy hoop bar: $1,590 - $2,090
  • Steel hoop bar, winch-ready: $1,990 - $2,690
  • Steel comp / hoopless bar with rated recovery: $2,290 - $3,090
  • Commercial triple-loop: $2,600 - $3,400
  • Raptor-specific bar: $2,790 - $3,990

Professional fitting: $450-$800 in metro areas.

Fitting notes — what to expect on a PX3

  • Plan 3-4 hours careful DIY. Two people minimum.
  • Factory bumper comes off in three pieces (centre section plus two outer wings).
  • Fog lights transfer to the new bar — every reputable PX3 bar includes fog relocation brackets.
  • Parking sensor pods (Wildtrak / Wildtrak X) plug straight into the factory loom.
  • DRLs and indicators on most PX3 bars are plug-and-play via CAN-bus module.

Three mistakes PX3 owners make

  1. Buying a PX2 bar. Won't fit. Bumper geometry revised in facelift.
  2. Confusing Ranger with Raptor. Different platforms — different bar.
  3. Ignoring GVM implications. A heavy steel bar + winch + spotties on a fully-built PX3 can push front axle weight close to rating. Plan GVM upgrades accordingly.
