Mazda BT-50 Bullbar and Lift Kit Guide (2020+ TF): Australian Buyer’s Guide
Share
The 2020+ Mazda BT-50 TF is, under the skin, an Isuzu D-Max. Same ladder chassis, same 3.0L turbo diesel, same 3500kg towing, same ADAS suite. The body styling is different and so are the front bumper and grille — but mechanically they're close siblings. That matters for aftermarket parts: most of what fits a 2020+ D-Max will fit a BT-50 with the right front-end kit, but the bullbar is NOT xross-compatible.
What cross-fits — and what doesn't
- Cross-fits: lift kits, rock sliders, diff drop kits, brake lines, most rear accessories.
- Does NOT cross-fit: bullbars, front bash plates, grille inserts, fog-light housings.
The BT-50 bumper is genuinely different. Bars marked "D-Max 2020+" will NOT fit a BT-50. Look for a bar specifically engineered for the TF BT-50.
BT-50 bullbars
Every BT-50 bullbar needs to satisfy AS 4876.1-2002 and ADR 69, and it must be ADAS-compatible for the TF platform. Same radar unit as the D-Max, same camera placement — but the bumper profile is different, so radar cutout geometry is BT-50-specific.
Styles:
- Single-loop (hoop) bullbar: The mainstream choice. Bonnet protection, aerial mounting, light-bar provision. $1,700-$2,700.
- Hoopless comp bar: Maximum approach angle, cleaner look. $2,200-$3,100.
- Triple-loop commercial bar: Heavy-duty, fleet-spec. $2,500-$3,300.
Alloy saves 35-45kg over equivalent steel.
BT-50 lift kits
Because the platform is shared with the D-Max RG, BT-50 lift kits are functionally identical. The spec traps are the same:
- Rear leafs must be rated to your constant rear load (400kg+ for most tourers).
- UCAs are essential for 45mm+ lifts.
- Always buy matched front/rear from a single brand.
Lift pricing:
- 45mm kit with foam-cell shocks: $1,790 - $2,590
- Premium 45mm kit + UCAs: $3,190 - $4,490
- 75mm kit with supporting mods + engineering: $4,490 - $6,490
- Certified GVM upgrade: $3,500 - $5,500
ADAS compatibility on the TF
The TF BT-50 runs Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, AEB, and Lane Keep Assist on most trims. A bullbar that blocks the radar will throw permanent ADAS faults and disable AEB. Buy only bars explicitly certified for TF ADAS compatibility.
Post-fit ADAS re-calibration is $150-$250 and worth it even on bars with correct cutouts.
GVM on the BT-50
Factory GVM on the TF BT-50 is 3100kg. Kerb with bullbar is 2300kg. Same 800kg payload window as the D-Max. A fully-built tourer needs a certified GVM upgrade for legal operation.
Tyre fitment
