Roof Rack Guide for Australian Touring: Flat vs Cage, Weight Limits, and Pricing

The roof of a 4x4 is expensive real estate. Done right, it carries a rooftop tent, a recovery board, a jerry can of fuel, an awning, and a spare tyre — everything that doesn't fit inside and can't ride in the tray. Done wrong, it wobbles, whistles on the highway, leaks at the gutter mounts, and limits the height of every car park you'll ever use.

This guide covers how to spec a roof rack for Australian touring — flat versus cage, weight limits, rooftop tent compatibility, and what to budget.

Flat rack vs cage (tub) rack

Flat rack

The modern standard. A flat platform with tie-down rails around the perimeter. Good for:

  • Rooftop tents (which need a flat surface).
  • Awnings and solar panels.
  • Clean aerodynamics at highway speed.

Most flat racks are aluminium. 25-45kg for a full-length platform.

Cage rack

Traditional touring rack with raised sides. Better for loose gear, spare tyres, and fuel jerries. Less suited to rooftop tents. Typically 40-70kg.

Roof weight limits — factory and dynamic

This trips up more owners than any other spec. Factory roof weight limits are low:

  • Most dual cabs: 100kg dynamic (in motion).
  • LandCruiser 200/300: 100-200kg depending on year.
  • Wagons (Prado, Patrol, Pajero): 100-120kg dynamic.

A rooftop tent is 60-90kg empty. Two adults in the tent is another 150-180kg — except that's static load (parked). Dynamic limits only apply when moving. As long as the setup is loaded-and-sleeping only when parked, dynamic limits are the only concern.

Running a 25kg rack + a 70kg RTT + a 25kg awning + a 10kg recovery board = 130kg dynamic. That's over factory spec on most dual cabs. A reinforced rack platform with distributed mounting points (six or eight points instead of the factory four) is often rated to 200kg+ dynamic — check the product spec.

Gutter-mount vs track-mount

Gutter mount

Older style. Clamps onto the factory rain gutter. Works on older LandCruisers (70/80/100 Series) and older wagons. Doesn't work on modern flush-roof vehicles.

Track mount (bolt-through)

Modern standard. Mounting tracks bolt through the roof into the factory B-pillar and C-pillar mounting points. Requires proper sealing — any rack that doesn't include roof sealant or pre-sealed mounting hardware is a leak waiting to happen.

Factory roof rail mount

Some racks clamp onto factory roof rails (Prado, Pajero, LC300 GR Sport). Easiest fit, but limited to the factory roof rail load rating.

Rooftop tent compatibility

If you're running an RTT:

  • Flat platform only (no cage rack).
  • Minimum length to fit your RTT footprint — most 2-person RTTs are 1400mm x 2400mm closed.
  • Mounting channels (T-slot or C-channel) to bolt the RTT to the rack.
  • At least six mounting points between rack and roof for distributed load.

Noise and aerodynamics

Every rack adds wind noise. Slatted platforms with aero deflectors at the front are quietest. Cage racks are loudest. At 100km/h highway, fuel economy typically drops 0.8-1.5L/100km with a loaded flat rack and awning. Factor that into long trips.
